The Difference Between Cheer Teams & Tumbling Classes

Zia Cheer • June 18, 2025

When people hear “cheer,” they often lump everything together—but at Zia Cheer, we know there’s a big difference between being on a cheer team and taking tumbling classes. Here's a breakdown to help you understand what makes each one special—and which might be right for your athlete.

What’s a Tumbling Class?

Tumbling classes are focused skill sessions where athletes learn and practice things like cartwheels, back handsprings, tucks, and layouts. These classes are open to all ages and skill levels and focus on individual growth, strength, and confidence.

  • ✅ 1–2 hours per week
  • ✅ No uniforms or travel required
  • ✅ Focused on progression and clean technique
  • ✅ Great for athletes in school cheer or other sports

What’s a Cheer Team?

Cheer teams at Zia are competitive teams that combine tumbling, stunting, dance, jumps, and teamwork into high-energy routines. These athletes practice multiple times a week, attend competitions, and commit to the season as a team.

  • 📣 Full-season commitment
  • 📣 Required choreography, uniforms, and travel
  • 📣 Athletes must attend all practices and events
  • 📣 Emphasis on group performance and team dynamic

Can You Do Both?

Absolutely! Many of our athletes take tumbling classes to sharpen their skills while also being part of a team. In fact, the most well-rounded cheerleaders usually do both.
